MARTIAL ARTS VS TRADITIONAL TEAM SPORTS?
For many parents, signing their child up for team sports is very important. They know the value of playing a team sport and how it's not only fun but helpful in raising a healthy child. Team sports teach us how to be a part of a team, how to be good winners, how to deal with loosing, keep us fit, and for some families is a part of long and proud tradition. More recently though, more and more parents are forgoing traditional team sports and choosing to enroll their kids in Martial Arts, and when possible Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and here's why:
  • Builds independence: If you have a child who does not enjoy team-related activities, martial arts provide a way for your little competitor to learn not only the physical skills of athletics but also the mental skills such as concentration and memory. We also train as a team and work as team so your child will learn how to work as a unit but when it comes time for competition or for training they have no one else to rely on but themselves, which builds independence vs. a team sport which can lead to codependence since you always have a team mate to rely on.

  • Safer than other activities: Study after study has shown that participation in a well-run martial arts school is far safer than nearly any other physical activity your child is likely involved in, including non-contact sports such as soccer.

  • Confidence builders: Some kids begin martial arts with self-confidence problems, because they are small or fragile or being bullied, and they quickly begin to look and feel more confident. Martial arts training can even be an introduction to good manners.

  • Working out the aggression: Another advantage martial arts, is that they discourage aggressive behavior outside of class. Because children who "bully" others often have self-esteem issues, the martial arts help to strengthen self-confidence.

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is nonviolent: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a non-striking system which is perfect for dealing with violence without having to resort to violence. Rather than brutally punch and kick your opponent, which in order to be effective relies on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, relies on leverage, giving a smaller and weaker person the ability to protect themselves against a larger stronger attacker with the added bonus of being able to control how little or how much damage to inflict. A student of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can choose to simply control their opponent until they calm down or they can put their opponent to sleep and walk away. Which is very important in today's world of lawsuits, where criminals can sue their victims for hurting them when they fight back.

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the single most effective martial art today: Since the early years of the UFC, where 165lb Royce Gracie defeated opponent after opponent, all masters of various other martial arts and often times twice as big, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has revolutionized combat sports and martial arts. Anyone can make claims about the effectiveness of their martial art but nothing has been more ring tested and proven to be more effective than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's influence has been so pervasive that even the US military and Police forces teach it as part of their hand to hand combat curriculum.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent sport and martial art to get your child involved in. It is practical, fun, and the benefits are numerous.
